Glossary Thread gauges
Thread gauges are used to quickly and easily check threads for compliance with permissible tolerances. Gauging” is not a measurement, so the result is not a numerical value, but only a classification of whether the workpiece is good or must be disposed of as scrap or reworked.
All relevant sizes are checked in one step using the thread gauge:
- The nominal diameter that corresponds to the outer diameter of a screw.
- The core diameter that corresponds to the inside diameter of a nut.
- The flank diameter, which corresponds to the distance between two opposing thread flanks measured perpendicular to the axis.
- The flank angle, which describes the angle formed by the thread flanks.
- The pitch is the distance between two thread flanks of the same direction.
Thread gauges include the
- Screw plug gauges
- Thread limit plug gauges
- Thread plug gauges
- Thread rejection plug gauges
- Thread ring gauges
- Thread scrap ring gauges
